St Andrew’s Riverside

39 new homes on the banks of the river Exe.

This extraordinary site in the middle of Tiverton is next to the River Exe, and over looked by listed buildings. Our proposal completes an important piece of historic town centre and creates a new mixed community. An 8m drop across the site was challenging for accessibility and viability. Our response separates pedestrians and cars and creates a new wheelchair access route. Our masterplan was inspired by the historic plans of Tiverton and the patterns of linear plots extending off mercantile streets that create narrow intimate cobbled lanes and courtyards with views to the river. Our proposal is for 39 new homes accessed via three pedestrian ‘lanes’ that lead towards the river culminating in a linear shared garden along the riverbank.

“This arguably offers the most romantic and picturesque urban prospect of all the finalists. For years this scheme had proved difficult to develop, with planners balking at previous proposals they felt presented too much of a barrier to the river. This scheme solves the problem by celebrating the site’s superb location on the banks of the River Exe as an opportunity rather than a constraint.”
