Brentford Lock West is part of a master plan for 540 homes delivered by Riches Hawley Mikhail, with Karakusevic Carsen and Duggan Morris Architects. Our client’s brief was to transform an industrial wasteland into a sensitive and elegant mixed tenure development, creating a new active edge to the Grand Union Canal. Our approach was a genuine collaboration with the other practices to create a sense of place and discernible character to the new neighbourhood. Our site is a linear plot that forms at the edge of the masterplan forming one side of a street leading to the canal and delivers 27 homes and 1 commercial unit. Key to the design was the creation of a street lined with kitchen windows and front doors and gardens.
“The architects have achieved something that is very difficult: the creation of an excellent residential block from a low budget and a project out of a ‘design and build’ procurement process. The completed building is economic and functional, but also thoughtful, and indeed, charming.”
